Stage set for world premiere of Mayo native's opera in Germany

THE world premiere of Patrick Cassidy's opera, ‘Dante - From Inferno to Paradise’, will be performed at Theatre Hof, in the German city in Bavaria, on Saturday, June 15.

This is one of the most significant and latest compositions from the Claremorris native, a labour of love for many years.

Patrick Cassidy is Ireland’s most renowned living classical composer, also well known for his film scores. Among his acclaimed works include the aria ‘Vide Cor Meum’, originally composed for the film Hannibal, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Anthony Hopkins, as well as the sound track for Calvary and the RTÉ 1916 documentary series.

Organised and hosted by the Institute for Culture Travel (IFC), the event is part of a captivating four-night tour package, inviting cultural enthusiasts and opera fans to immerse themselves in Germany's rich artistic heritage. This unique experience promises an unforgettable journey through two iconic German cities, Hof and Dresden, combining cultural exploration with wonderful opera.

“Guests will enjoy a two-night stay in the picturesque town of Hof, nestled on the banks of the Saale in Bavaria. The tours highlight in Hof will be the world premiere of Patrick Cassidy's opera, ‘Dante - From Inferno to Paradise’.

“We are delighted that Patrick Cassidy will attend the drinks reception and dinner to welcome our guests to Hof and to give a short talk on the opera, which has direct link with Vide Cor Meum. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet the composer and enjoy an introduction to the opera performance,” said Caroline Quigley, general manager of IFC & Keith Prowse Ireland.

The tour continues with a two-night stay in the breath-taking city of Dresden, known for its architectural splendour and cultural importance. Dresden rose to artistic prominence in the 18th century and was restored to its former glory after the Allied bombings of 1945. It is considered one of the world’s most remarkable restorations, making it the perfect destination for history and culture enthusiasts.

Guests will be treated to a performance of Mozart's enchanting opera ‘Die Zauberflöte’ at the renowned Semper Opera House, one of Germany's most iconic opera venues, designed by the legendary architect Gottfried Semper. Set along the majestic River Elbe, Dresden's Semper Opera House boasts a rich history dating back to the 19th century. The modern company has built upon the long-standing tradition of high standards of musicianship and visually exciting productions to ensure a consistently high standard of performance.
