Mayo community plunged into grief by death of young sportsman
The death of Matthew Mullahy, Ballyneggin, Castlebar, has evoked a tremendous sense of grief and loss in the county town.
An accomplished young sportsman, local clubs Castlebar Mitchels and Castlebar Celtic, of which he was an active playing member, have joined in paying tribute to the deceased.
A post shared on the Castlebar Mitchels Facebook page stated: "All at Castlebar Mitchels are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our member Matthew.
"Matthew was a very talented player and a great team-mate who played on our underage teams all the way up through the club.
"He played a pivotal role in the club winning a county Under-16A title in 2020.
"Last season he played on our Under-21 and Junior teams with the style and flair that he always brought to the game.
"We send our sincere condolences to his parents Sean and Grace, his brother Conor and all the Mullahy and McHale families and friends.
"May he rest in peace."
A tribute by Castlebar Celtic FC said its members were devastated by the news of Matthew's passing.
"Matthew was part of our Under-21 and Super League squads last season. We extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family."
Matthew is deeply regretted by his parents Sean and Grace, his brother Conor, granny Ena, uncles, aunts, many cousins and a large circle of friends, to whom heartfelt sympathy is tendered.
Many tributes are being paid to the deceased on social media where condolences are also being extended to the bereaved family on their great loss.
Matthew will repose at his residence in Ballyneggin, Castlebar (F23 HK82), via N5 Dublin Road, on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m.
The house is private at all other times.
Removal from his residence takes place on Wednesday (via Old Turlough Road) for Requiem Mass in Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar, at 2.30 p.m.
Matthew will be laid to rest afterwards in the New Cemetery, Castlebar.
