Crews working to repair major water burst in north Mayo

UISCE Éireann is working to restore water to customers in Ballina following a major burst at Pearse Street.

Every effort is being made to maintain water supply to as many customers as possible, but the burst, which occurred during the night, is impacting some customers in the town centre.

This latest outage comes just hours after crews repaired a burst in the town centre yesterday evening and a normal water supply had returned when a second burst occurred.

Access to Pearse Street will be restricted this morning to allow repairs to take place.

Uisce Éireann’s Colette Scahill assured customers that every effort is being made to restore water as quickly as possible.

“We understand the inconvenience of an unplanned outage and we thank customers for their support while the repair works are ongoing,” she said.

“Vulnerable customers who have registered with Uisce Éireann receive direct communications from us for planned and unplanned outages lasting more than four hours. Uisce Éireann continues to provide detailed, real-time, and local information about water service and supply issues on www.water.ie. The Uisce Éireann customer care helpline is open 24/7 on 1800 278 278 and updates are also issued via Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) @IWCare.”

Uisce Éireann confirmed that works under the National Leakage Reduction Programme, which began this month, will put an end to unplanned outages in Ballina town centre.

More than 1.3km of old pipes, which have been creating disruption for the local community, will be replaced in phases along Pearse Street, Lower Pearse Street, Humbert Street, Dillon Terrace, Pawn Office Lane and Emmet Street.

Within months residents and businesspeople in Ballina will see firsthand the benefits of these works. These new pipes will reduce high levels of leakage, reduce outages and improve water quality.
