Free parking permit suggested for rate payers in west Mayo town

A FREE parking permit has been requested for rate payers in Westport.

The call was made by Councillor Christy Hyland at a municipal district meeting, for the business community who are up to date with their rates or payment plan.

Businesses, he said, have faced numerous challenges, from VAT increases, the warehousing of tax during Covid and high interest rates, and they had to be supported.

Councillor Johnny O'Malley said this operated in other towns and he couldn't see why it couldn't be done in Westport.

Members were told there is a scheme in Castlebar based on rates paid within a timeline.

Director of services Catherine McConnell requested clarity from members on who the intended target recipients are.

Municipal head Padraig Walsh suggested they work together on precise wording that covers all situations.
