Mayo development plan contravened to allow 25 housing units proceed

A MATERIAL contravention of the county development plan has been agreed at municipal level to clear the way for a 25-unit housing development in Claremorris.

It relates to plans for a mix of bungalows, semi-detached and maisonette homes at Elm Park, Clare, Claremorris.

Councillors, at their monthly municipal district meeting, were unanimous in approving the material contravention, which was necessary as the proposal is contrary to the zoning provision in the development plan.

A report issued to elected members set out how the proposed development was previously permitted for residential development, where 158 units was granted on the total site area. However, this portion of the site was never developed.

The development proposed would result in the full completion of Elm Park and would be a welcomed development for occupants who have lived in a partially finished development for a considerable time.

It would enhance both the residential and visual amenity of Elm Park residents.

Councillor Richard Finn said Claremorris and other towns and villages are in dire need of housing. It was great to see the planners supporting them.

This, he added, was local government at its best.
