Mayo to receive funding of €36.6m. to improve local and regional roads

Regional and local roads in Mayo are set to be improved as a result of a much-needed funding boost, Deputy Alan Dillon has said.

Deputy Dillon outlined that funding of €36,676,730 which has been allocated to Mayo County Council for the protection and renewal of our existing regional and local road network will be of huge benefit to Mayo.

He said: “I am pleased that Mayo County Council will be allocated €810,000 for specific improvement works to the at Glencastle along with the Kilkelly Relief Road, the Lahardane to Crossmolina Road, the Killala Regional Road Improvement scheme as well as phase two of Glenisland Road.

"Further funding has also been allocated to the Kilmaine to Tuam road and the Cong outer relief road under the Strategic Regional and Local roads programme.

“A total of €658 million will be invested in roads around the country this year.

"This represents an increase of €32m for road pavement and rehabilitation works.

"This funding will help to maintain approximately 2,640km of regional and local roads and strengthen a further 2,160km. It will improve the quality of the road network overall.

“An important part of this allocation is the climate change adaptation grant, which will help future proof our roads.

"There is now more support available for drainage works, flood protection, severe weather works and salt purchase so that we can be better prepare ourselves for the whatever weather conditions this year brings.

Other features of this year’s investment programme include:

•Road pavement strengthening works

•Preventative surface dressing work

•Bridge rehabilitation works

•Signage

•Safety improvement works

“I look forward to Mayo County Council utilising this funding to the maximum benefit for Mayo’s road users and pedestrians,” Deputy Dillon added.

Welcoming the news, Minister of State Dara Calleary said: "This investment will allow us to repair, strengthen and maintain our roads across the region, ensuring they are fit for purpose.

"We are dedicating resources towards initiatives such as road repair, bridge rehabilitation, road safety measures, community engagement, drainage improvements, and climate change adaptation."

Mayo Senator Lisa Chambers stated: “Maintaining and improving our road network is crucial to sustaining and developing our local economies across rural Ireland.

"These roads are imperative for children getting to school and people getting to work safely.''
