Mayo FG branch renamed in honour of Michael Sloyan

THE Bekan Fine Gael Branch has been renamed the Michael Sloyan Bekan Fine Gael Branch.

A community celebration was held in Brickens to mark the renaming that honours a true community stalwart.

Brickens Community Centre was full to capacity on Friday night as people from all political backgrounds gathered for the branch's renaming - 'a fitting tribute to a man who truly believed in community and politics', said local FG election candidate Alma Gallagher.

On her social media, Ms. Gallagher recalled: “Michael had many passions in life, from his involvement in Fine Gael, Bekan Parish Church and Choir, Bekan National School and East Mayo Ramblers Group.”

She extended thanks to Michael Swords, branch chairperson, for organising a wonderful commemoration, and to the Sloyan family for enabling the renaming of the branch in Michael’s honour.

Contributors at the event included Councillors John Cribbin and Michael Burke, MEP Maria Walsh, Deputies Alan Dillon and Michael Ring and also Jim Higgins.

Councillor Cribbin congratulated all involved in the event, saying: “It was richly deserved and carried out with great dignity. The huge crowd that attended was evidence of the esteem in which Michael Sloyan was held in.”
