Dangerous junction in south Mayo requires 'urgent action'

CONCERN about road safety at the crossroad junction on the Knock Road, Claremorris, has been expressed by local election candidate Paul Lawless, who has called for immediate action.

Mr. Lawless explained: “The crossroad junction on the old Knock Road in Claremorris has become the most dangerous stretch of road within the area, with several crashes and near misses in recent years.

“There is a major issue with cars crossing the old Knock Road and failing to stop, heightening the risk to other cars and pedestrians in the locality.

“The junction is the crossroads linking Knock Road and Claremount Manor. This junction has seen a significant increase in traffic volumes as Google Maps and other GPS providers are directing motorists from Sligo to Castlebar via the old bog road at Damien Fahey Steel, toward Mount St. Michael School and accessing the N60 Castlebar Road at Claremorris athletic track.

“Strangers to the area travelling from the North are taking a right off the N17 and travelling across the bog road. These motorists in many cases do not realise they are approaching a crossroads and must stop. There have been many accidents at this junction in recent years.”

Added Mr. Lawless: “I am appealing to Mayo County Council to rectify the situation. I have also contacted Google Maps requesting the company direct traffic through an alternative route.

“In the meantime, I am appealing to the local motorists to exercise extreme caution while approaching this junction.”
