Mayo college celebrate memorable Connacht title triumph

St. Gerald's College, Castlebar, lifted the Connacht A Under 19 title today with a 1-0 win over St. Muredach's College, Ballina, in Enniscrone.

The game was played in very wet and windy conditions.

St. Gerald's greater composure helped them dominate the first half.

Gavin Forry scored a screamer from outside the box in the 13th minute and it proved decisive.

Shortly afterwards a Cian Walsh shot came off the hands of St. Muredach's 'keeper Matthew Fox and rebounded off the bar before the goalie claimed possession.

Later in the half, Tiernan Tighe and Matthew Leonard had efforts for St. Muredach's, the former's drawing a save from St. Gerald's goalkeeper Oisin Costello and the latter's narrowly clearing the crossbar.

St. Muredach's enjoyed a number of purple patches in the second half but were kept at bay by the heroics of Oisin Costello in the St. Gerald's goal, who made a number of fine saves, most notably to deny Corey Lavery-McCay and Sean Fitzpatrick.

Overall, however, St. Gerald's defended well, led by Shane Cunningham in the back four, and they claimed a magnificent victory. Congratulations also to their coaches, Mr. Joyce and Mr. Curran.
