Uisce Éireann project springs east Mayo town into action

Swinford is looking forward to an eventful weekend with Blue Light Day and the town’s annual 5K race, and this year the community can have more confidence in its water supply.

Uisce Éireann has replaced 2.5km of old water mains which were susceptible to regular bursts.

The new pipes along Davitt Place, Park Road, Kiltimagh Road, Chapel Street and Market Street have put a stop to outages and the loss of treated drinking water into the ground.

Uisce Éireann’s Enda MacNamara is grateful to the community for their patience while Farrans Construction carried out the important works on behalf of Uisce Éireann. Remaining reinstatement works will be completed in the coming weeks.

Said Enda: “Fewer bursts and less leakage mean a stronger supply for homes and businesses. Swinford is no longer under threat of sporadic bursts. The local community was a great support during this project, which will have long term benefits for homes and businesses.”

This project forms part of Uisce Eireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme and will help us achieve the 2030 goal of a national leakage rate of 25%. The national leakage reduction team has made great strides since 2018, when the leakage rate stood at 46%.

Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested more than €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across the country through the delivery of the leakage reduction programme.

Uisce Éireann is investing a further €250 million every year up to the end of 2030 to fix leaks and replace pipes to provide a more reliable water supply.
