Connacht journeys end for Swinford and S&F women
THERE was no joy for Mayo women's teams on the national and provincial competition front at the weekend.
Manulla exited the FAI Women's Amateur Cup in a competitive clash with Knocknacarra in Galway, where a single goal (2-1) decided that the hosts would progress.
Attention for the Mayo side now shifts to their Connacht Cup semi-final, which takes place on March 24.
Two provincial semi-finals featured Mayo teams, with Swinford losing 1-3 at home in the Cup to Corrib Celtic. In an even tie, the score stood at 1-1 at the end of normal time. The visitors, however, were to kick on in extra time and book their place in the final.
Straide & Foxford lost out to a first-half Mervue goal in their Connacht Shield semi-final.
Elsewhere, the TUS Midlands women's team were crowned O'Regan Cup winners 2024 after defeating University of Galway 4-0 during the week. The Athlone college side featured a number of Mayo players, including Abby Sweeney of Kiltimagh Knock United, former KK player Roisin Molloy, now with Athlone Town, and Kelsey Munroe, Sligo Rovers, and formerly of Ballinrobe Town. Defender Kelsey captained the side.
Roisin Molloy had cause for double celebrations after her Athlone Town side defeated Peamount to win the President's Cup at the weekend.
