West Mayo candidate Keira Keogh launches election campaign
FIRST-TIME Westport election candidate Keira Keogh has officially launched her campaign for this June's council elections.
The Helm in Westport saw a diverse crowd, spanning generations and political affiliations, as they gathered on the leap year for the Fine Gael candidate's launch, with seasoned political party members and first-time voters, creating an atmosphere charged with anticipation and excitement.
Keira used the opportunity of the leap year custom to make a compelling proposal to the crowd - not for marriage, but for their support at the ballot box.
In a passionate speech, she touched on people's struggles and the concerns they face in their daily lives, from lack of childcare, to loneliness and isolation, challenges for local businesses with rents and rates, delays to services for the most vulnerable, and difficulties with housing and accommodation.
She spoke about her readiness for the role of county councillor and how she feels her values, including empathy, service to others and a hard work ethic, will ensure her effectiveness in delivering results, if elected.
The evening kicked off with traditional Irish music by the talented Des Cafferkey and friends, with Irish dancing by Kate and Honor Quinn, two very talented young dancers aged just nine and seven years.
Deputy Alan Dillon, Deputy Michael Ring and MEP Maria Walsh delivered powerful speeches, inspiring guests to get behind Keira in the run up to the June 7 elections.
Deputy Dillon commented: “It's great to see a new face, a new voice and a fresh perspective. The electorate would be well represented with Keira who is a fantastic candidate; compassionate, professional and dedicated.”
Deputy Ring thanked Keira for 'having the courage to run and stand up for democracy at a time when it needs protecting most'.
He stated: “She is a strong candidate with roots firmly in the area and we need her voice on the county council.”
MEP Walsh, who has known Keira for over a decade, said: “We are lucky to have a candidate with Keira’s capabilities and credentials on the ballot paper.” She hopes the people of Mayo will have her vision and skill set on the council after the election.
Keira thanked her running mate, Councillor Peter Flynn, for his friendship and guidance and said, if elected, she aspires to have his reputation for straight talking and authenticity. She also expressed gratitude to her campaign team, family, Fine Gael members and all who attended.
The attendance included Fine Gael candidates Alma Gallagher (Ballyhaunis) and Pat Chambers (Newport).
