Mayo Young Sports Stars: Castlebar swimmers made a big splash in their local pool

The Castlebar Community Games Under 16 boys team of Jamie O'Malley, Conor McNamara, Nojus Norvilas and Matthew Walsh won the national swimming relay medley.

Memorably, the Castlebar Swimming Club members had the distinction of winning in their home pool, putting in a superb performance to claim the national Community Games title.

The national swimming finals in the Lough Lannagh Leisure Complex proved to be a resounding success, with over 800 young swimmers taking to the water from Under 10 up to Under 16 level.

A total of 37 finals were held on the day, along with 35 heats, and 156 participants received medals after 37 presentations on the podium.

The national president of Community Games, Gerry McGuinness, was on hand to make the presentations and welcome the participants to the Castlebar venue, and it was fitting that he could present gold to the Castlebar Under 16 boys in the 4 x 50m medley.

Next up for the lads is a trip to Breaffy House Resort, Castlebar, for The Connaught Telegraph Mayo Young Sports Stars Awards tomorrow (Friday, March 8), where they will receive more recognition. For ticket details, contact Aiden Henry on (087) 6582141 or aiden.henry@con-telegraph.ie.
