The replaced sign at the entrance to the townland of Annagh on the Westport Road outside Castlebar.

Still looking for answers on removed Mayo townland signs

THE quest to find out why placename signs were removed from the Westport Road in Castlebar - and who’s going to pay to replace them - continues.

A motion about the ‘famous’ signs is being tabled by Councillor Ger Deere at the next monthly meeting of Mayo County Council, he informed colleagues at a Castlebar district meeting.

The signs, which had been in situ for generations, have been recycled, and nothing can be done about them, the councillor has been told.

However, Councillor Deere wants them replaced, and he doesn’t think Castlebar Municipal District should be footing the bill.

He added that he still hasn’t received answers as to who ordered they be removed and the costs involved, saying it had been a waste of money.

Councillor Michael Kilcoyne supported his call for a full report on the matter.

No one believed they were recycled that quickly, commented Councillor Martin McLoughlin, who added that replacement costs shouldn’t come out of their budget.
