Death of Mayo businessman deeply mourned

The death has occurred of John Hanley, Station Road, Castlebar.

One of Mayo's best known and most respected businessmen before his retirement some years ago, he died peacefully at his home earlier today.

Predeceased by his parents Charlie and Nelly Hanley, he is deeply regretted by his heartbroken wife Attracta, sons Cathal, Padraic, John and Colm, daughters-in-law Deirdre, Maeve, Orlaith and Collette, his adored grandchildren Matthew, Ben, Like and Pippa-Rose, brother-in-law Padraic, sister-in-law Marian, cousins, relatives, neighbours and friends, to whom sympathy is extended.

An avid Mayo GAA supporter, news of his passing has evoked an immense sense of loss in the community.

In a tribute, Castlebar Mitchels said its members were saddened to learn of John's passing.

"He was a loyal supporter of our club and sponsored many teams and tournaments over the years.

"We extend our condolences to his wife Attracta and family."

Many warm tributes are being paid to him on social media where he was described as 'a great Castlebar gentleman with a kind heart.'

The county town will certainly be a lesser place without his presence.

A former newsagent, he operated a shop at the Mall in Castlebar before opening a very successful supermarket at Station Road. He also ran a toy shop at Market Square for some years.

An accomplished athlete in his youth, John was a member of Castlebar Golf Club for many years and was one of its most popular members.

John will repose in Coady’s Funeral Home on Sunday from 4 p.m. with removal at 7 p.m. to his home.

Removal from his home on Monday at 10 a.m for Requiem Mass at 11.30 a.m in the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar.

John will be laid to rest afterwards in the New Cemetery, Castlebar.
