Inaugural nine-a-side Gaelic tournament at Mayo festival of football

THIS Easter bank holiday weekend, Castlebar will become the epicentre of Gaelic football as the county town hosts their first-ever nine-a-side Gaelic football tournament.

Set against the backdrop of MacHale Park, this festival of football promises thrills and spills for players and spectators alike. And there's loads happening off the pitch too with music and more.

Taking place on the weekend of March 30 and 31 at Castlebar Mitchels GAA Club, the tournament introduces an innovative nine-a-side format. With nine players on the field and three rolling subs, it promotes positive, attacking football and showcases the finest skills from men’s and ladies’ teams from right across the country.

The event will be officially launched this Saturday evening at the Linenhall Arts Centre.

The event is not just about football - it’s a festival for the whole family. Over the weekend, attendees will be treated to live music, local food options, and a wide range of family-friendly entertainment activities. From face painting to bouncing castles, there’s something for everyone, making it an ideal inclusive outing for families looking to enjoy the holiday weekend together.

Once the sun sets, the marquee serves as the centre of excitement with live local and national musical acts. From sean-nós singing to traditional instrumental groups, the beats will be as intense as the games.

“The nine-a-side Gaelic football tournament is a testament to the community spirit and love for sports in Castlebar. We’re thrilled to bring together teams from near and far for an unforgettable weekend of competition and camaraderie,” said Stephen Keane, one of the driving forces behind the event.

The tournament aims to foster a sense of community, promote healthy competition, and provide a platform for Gaelic football enthusiasts to come together. As the matches unfold on the field, the vibrant atmosphere will spill over into the surrounding festivities, creating an immersive experience for all attendees.
