Lá Mór Glas Concert lights up progressive Mayo primary school
The school yard came alive with the vibrant energy of music, dance, drama and poetry as students and staff gathered to celebrate the rich tapestry of Irish culture at the Lá Mór Glas concert in Balla National School.
This event, held in honour of Seachtain na Gaeilge, showcased the talents of our school and served as a poignant reminder of the importance of preserving and cherishing our Irish heritage.
From the moment the children sang Amhrán na bhFiann, the audience was treated to a captivating array of performances that spanned the breadth of Irish tradition.
From Junior Infants to 6th children graced the stage with renditions of traditional Irish songs such as Peigin Leitir Mór, Oro Sé do Bheatha 'Bhaile, Glaoch na hÉireann, Lig Mé Saor and Seo é an Saol - each note echoing with the soulful melodies that have been passed down through generations.
Accompanied by the gentle strumming of guitars, piano, whistle, spoons, bodhrån and banjo, the musical talents of all our children were celebrated.
In a heartwarming display of creativity and cuteness, the Junior Infants captivated audiences with their endearing dramatical performance of An Zú.
The young talents took to the stage with faces painted as various zoo animals, bringing a touch of whimsy and charm to their portrayal.
Their performance left their audience in awe as the pint-sized actors showcased their linguistic skills along with their dramatic flair.
With each child embodying a different zoo animal, the stage came alive with a colourful array of characters, from roaring lions to playful monkeys.
But the celebration didn't stop there. Dancers dazzled us with the Hocai Pocai and An Dreoilin paying homage to the vibrant tradition of Irish ceili dance.
Their spirited performances filled the air with an infectious energy, inspiring cheers and applause from the audience.
In addition to the musical and dance performances, Julianne Nash treated the audience to a wonderful recitation of "The Travelling Piperman" which wove a beautiful tale reminding us to use the talents we posess to bring joy to those around us and that wealth isn't measured by earthly posessions.
A beautiful rendition of "Roisin Dubh" as Ghaeilge was sang by Cera Maloney who captivated the audience with her mesmerising tones.
Lå Mår Glas reached its crescendo with a superb performance of singing by Martha Kavanagh, Aila Duggan, Cera Maloney, Amelia Duffy and Emma Dunne.
With harmonies that blended seamlessly and voices that soared with emotion, they delivered a stirring rendition of the heartfelt ballads Eileen Óg and The Connemara Cradle Song.
Their performance was not just a display of vocal talent but a testament to the camaraderie and unity that music fosters among young performers.
The school's music group took to the stage for the grand finale. With instruments in hand and passion in their hearts, they launched into a lively medley of tunes that had the audience clapping and tapping their feet along to the infectious rhythm.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Lá Mór Glas was the sense of community that permeated every moment.
The school reflected on this time two years ago when we welcomed its first Ukrainian children to Balla National School.
A mere two years later, what an incredible achievement to see students from different nationalities and backgrounds coming together, united by their shared love for Irish culture.
As the school reflects on the success of Lá Mor Glas concert, we are reminded of the importance of embracing and celebrating our cultural heritage.
Through music, dance, song and poetry, we honour the past while paving the way for future generations to continue the legacy of Irish culture.
To everyone who contributed to the success of the Lå Mor Glas concert — from the performers, the enthusiastic audience members and organiser Mariea Kelly — the school extends its heartfelt thanks.
Your dedication and passion brought joy and inspiration to the school community and it looks forward to continuing to celebrate our Irish heritage for years to come.
