Retired nurse was victim of Mayo fire tragedy

A 91-year-old retired nurse was the victim of a house fire in Kiltimagh yesterday.

She has been named locally as Mary McNicholas who lived alone at Cordarragh on the outskirts of the east Mayo town.

The tragedy has numbed the local community where the deceased was held in high esteem.

Gardai do not believe there is anything suspicious about the fire incident.

However, they have sealed off the property for the purposes of a full investigation.

Gardai and fire services attended the house blaze mid-afternoon and brought it under control.

Ms. McNicholas’s remains have been brought to Mayo University Hospital where a post mortem examination will be conducted later.

A file is being prepared for the local coroner and an inquest will be held in due course.

Tributes are being paid to the deceased on social media where she was described as 'a beautiful person'.
