Amalgamation of two Mayo water schemes progressing with upgrade approved

THE amalgamation of the Attymass and Callow Lake group water schemes has taken a significant step forward, with plans for an upgrade of the scheme approved by Mayo County Council.

Attymass GWS is currently on the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Governments Rural Water Remedial Action List (RAL) due to an inadequate treatment process and a failure to meet the Drinking Water Regulation Standards for chemical and indicator parameters and is directly impacted by having a vulnerable source which carries a high risk of contamination with Cryptosporidium.

Callow Lake GWS has adequate treatment and capacity to cater for Attymass GWS’s demand.

Therefore, a decision has been taken to amalgamate the two schemes, abandon the source at Attymass, and supply the scheme from the source at Callow Lake, a report submitted to council planners explained.

To facilitate this a number of pipe upgrade and replacement works are proposed.

Approximately 7km of interconnecting main is to be installed from the source at Callow Lake to the Attymass GWS.

Further works are to be carried out on the existing Attymass and Callow Lake schemes to reduce the amount of unaccounted for water on the schemes. This involves the replacement of 12.8km of existing mains.

The proposed Attymass GWS watermain upgrade works are located in the townlands of Carrowkeribly, Bunnafinglas and Drumscoba.

The interconnector pipelines works are located in Corradrishy, Boherhallagh, Coolagagh, Cuillonaghtan and Callow. The proposed Callow GWS watermain upgrade works are located in the townlands of Barleyhill, Bohola, Toocananagh, Ballinlag, Gortnasillagh, Coolagh, Carrowmore, Ballinvoher, Lislackagh, Lissanumera, Tullanacorra, Carrowbaun, Rathslevin, Tooromin, Carrowcanada, Lismiraun, Treanfohanaun and Shanaghy.
