Council selling section of former Mayo factory for €1.27m. to local firm

Mayo County Council is selling a section of the former Volex factory at Breaffy Road in Castlebar to Ballinrobe-based firm Dextex Limited for a sum of €1.27 million.

It is being sold in accordance with Section 183 of the Local Government Act, 2001.

That means the disposal of the property, comprising of approximately 60,000 square feet, must be approved by elected members of Castlebar Municipal District and Mayo County Council.

Councillor Cyril Burke has welcomed the proposed sale to a company owned by the Vaughan family, Ballinrobe.

He said looked forward to the elected members rubber-stamping the sale as it represented a good return on the council's investment when it acquired the entire Volex building a number of years ago for a sum in the region of €700,000.

"The Vaughan family is a very progressive and innovative in the Mayo business world and I wish them every success going forward," he stated.

A different section of the property, consisting of 20,000 square feet, was leased by the council to another business operation some years ago.

Councillors in the Castlebar Municipal District are expected to give approval at their meeting next Wednesday and the matter will then be placed on the agenda of the April meeting of Mayo County Council.
