More investment needed in Mayo's local and regional roads

THE government is being urged to invest more money in local and regional roads.

There are potholes on every country road due to the rain, lamented Councillor Christy Hyland at a municipal meeting. There is only so much the council can do with the funding it receives and more investment is needed, he stated.

With rising inflation, every year less kilometres of work can be done, said Councillor Paul McNamara.

He cited the Wild Atlantic Way where tourists are being encouraged to drive down local roads, yet there has been no money put into them.

An extra funding stream should be allocated for local and regional roads along the Wild Atantic Way, said Councillor McNamara.

Material costs have risen 30-40% but allocations have stagnated, commented Councillor Peter Flynn, and a message had to go back to government that more funding is needed.

Councillor Johnny O'Malley said people pay property tax, car tax and NCT their vehicles. And what do they get for it? “Nothing.”
