BBC crew in north Mayo for eclipse

A BBC crew is in Belmullet for this evening's partial solar eclipse.

County Mayo will have the best view in Europe - clouds permitting - and the Mullet Peninsula is the best place to be.

Mayo North Tourism and Erris at Night are working with the BBC news team today to send a crew to Cross Abbey to film the Erris at Night Eclipse Watch Party.

People are invited to Cross Abbey at 5 p.m. for a quick filming segment, or join them later at 7.45 p.m. for the actual partial eclipse.

Regardless of cloud cover, which may be prevailing, the groups are meeting to talk eclipses together.

More than 45% of the sun will be eclipsed by the moon during the event.

Anyone following the eclipse is advised to protect your eyes and don't stare directly at the sun.
