FG call to support Mayo airport at Ard Fheis
CLAREMORRIS Electoral Area candidate Alma Gallagher has called on Fine Gael in government to support regional airports, with specific focus on Ireland West Airport in recognition of their importance for instigating economic activity and connectivity.
Speaking at the 82nd Fine Gael Ard Fheis at the weekend, Ms. Gallagher stated: “Regional airports are gateways to opportunity, hubs of connectivity that as an island link us to the rest of the world.
“We will always argue on the western seaboard that airports need to be supported as they act as the drivers for regional development. A far cry from the 8,000 visitors in the early days, Ireland West Airport has generated €140 million in tourism revenue, created 200 jobs, one million bed nights annually and supports 6,000 jobs. And as the cost of living crisis loomed, January to June 2023 saw a record number of passengers - 367,000 passengers to be exact - pass through its doors.
“This success needs to be harnessed and as a proud Mayo candidate I welcome this government's commitment to support our airports. Let this Ard Fheis be a definitive call to action to rally behind our airports providing the support and resources they need to thrive.”
Ms. Gallagher also commented: “Our commitment must extend beyond the economic realm. Regional airports like Ireland West Airport are lifelines for remote communities, connecting them to essential services and opportunities, ensuring prosperity reaches every corner of our nation.”
