Councillor wants full accountability on Mayo Peace Park wall

CASTLEBAR Municipal District has sought quotes for a fencing structure around the Mayo Peace Park wall, Councillor Donna Sheridan has confirmed.

There are subsidence issues at the wall in the popular visitor attraction in the county town.

Councillor Sheridan continues to push for answers to her questions about where responsibility lies.

She stated: “The Mayo Peace Park wall is an iconic structure in Castlebar and we must do everything we can to ensure that it is made safe.”

Councillor Sheridan has requested a report from the Castlebar Municipal District on who was responsible for the construction of the wall, how much did it cost, and where the original funding came from.

Councillor Sheridan stated: “We must ensure firstly the safety of the structure by construction fencing around the wall, which is now subsiding.

“We also must ask the questions of who is responsible for this.

“The wall is only built approximately 16 years and we should not be faced with having to consider reconstructing this wall using taxpayers' money while holding nobody responsible for the defective structure.

“I asked also that we contact our insurance company to see if this is covered by Mayo County Council's insurance.

“Somebody designed this structure, constructed it and signed off on it and we need to know where the responsibility lies and pursue this before we progress with the next steps.”
