Mayo appeal for greater regulation of vape outlets

A Mayo election candidate has called for a response to a surge in the number of vape shops opening across the country.

Harry Barrett says authorities must take a stand to protect public health.

The Castlebar-based school teacher said concerns have been raised with him on the doorsteps regarding the lax enforcement of age restrictions in these establishments, prompting his calls for immediate action.

Barrett continued: "There is growing concern that underage young people in our towns may be accessing vaping products without proper age vetting, posing a significant risk to their health and wellbeing.

"The health problem was highlighted by Professor Dónal O'Shea, at the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland recently.

"Professor O'Shea emphasised the potentially dire consequences of long-term vape usage, citing concerns over the development of future cancers and cardiovascular ailments.

"Recent research conducted by the RCSI using artificial intelligence has also shown the alarming presence of toxic compounds in flavoured vapes, further heightening worries about the health implications of these products.

"In light of these findings, I am calling for a completely ban on the opening of new vape shops and advocating for enhanced enforcement measures to ensure compliance with age restrictions.

"It is crucial that the health and safety of young people is safeguarded against the potential hazards associated with vaping.

"Furthermore, I'm calling upon the gardaí to implement regular checks to verify the ages of people purchasing vaping products, thereby curbing the accessibility of these items to children.

"Decisive action must be taken to address the rising concerns surrounding vaping and I want this issue taken seriously."
