Residential plan for former pub property under appeal

THE planned transformation of a pub premises in Castlebar into a residential property is before An Bord Pleanála.

Mayo County Council turned down a proposal for the property at 36 Spencer Street, Castlebar, which involved the refurbishment of the existing public house and residential building into a new residential property, with partial demolition of the existing building for the construction of a new two-storey dwelling.

Applicants Martin Lally and Fionnuala Byrne have appealed that decision to An Bord Pleanála.

The decision to refuse planning permission related to design features and characteristics being out of character with the overall design theme of Spencer Street.

Also, in the absence of an archaeological assessment, planners couldn't be satisfied the development would not injure or interfere with a historic monument, which is registered, and were precluded from granting planning.

The property is currently vacant.
