Mayo candidate calls on voters 'to evict Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael'

Mayo People Before Profit campaigner Joe Daly has confirmed his candidacy for the local elections on June 7, standing in the Castlebar Electoral Area.

A native of Castlebar and a secondary school teacher in St. Gerald’s College for the past 17 years, Mr. Daly has been an elected trade union representative for the ASTI for the past six years and has been heavily involved in building people powered campaigns on Housing For All, Palestine Solidarity, Right to Water, Repeal of the 8th, Anti-Racism & Cost of Living Campaigns.

He stated: “It’s time voters evicted Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael and put a determined campaigner onto Mayo Council to fight for the interests of working people.

"The pro-developer and pro-landlord policies of the big parties have caused untold misery and suffering for so many of the locked out generation”

“Housing and dereliction are the biggest issues concerning constituents and I believe that a housing campaigner like myself can use the council seat as a platform to bring serious pressure to bear on the big parties to build public housing on public land and to compulsorily purchase vacant homes left empty for long periods.

"It is shameful during this crisis that we have hundreds of empty houses and ghost estates in Castlebar left to rot while we have hundreds of families in need of a home in the area”

Mr. Daly further stated: “If elected I will also use my seat to oppose the nasty disinformation campaigns of some far right elements in Mayo who try to lead people to believe that Mayo is full when in fact as per Census 2022 it is full of empty houses with 8,922 vacant dwellings that I will fight to have bought by the council to resolve the housing shortage in the county.”
