Mayo anger over delay in installed traffic lights at dangerous junctions

A Mayo independent councillor has expressed frustration over Transport Infrastructure Ireland's (TII) failure to install new traffic lights at two critical junctions in Ballina despite an urgent need and a year-long wait for a response.

Councillor Mark Duffy stating that the traffic lights at the Font and on the Sligo Road are over 20 years old and frequently malfunction.

This situation creates severe traffic congestion during peak hours in the morning and evening, causing significant delays and inconvenience for local commuters.

"The current traffic lights are outdated and regularly out of order," said Councillor Duffy.

"Even when they are working, they do little to ease the heavy traffic that builds up at these key intersections.

"It's clear that we need smart traffic lights to better manage the flow of vehicles and improve traffic conditions in Ballina."

According to Councillor Duffy, the Ballina Municipal District office submitted an application to TII for the installation of updated traffic lights a year ago.

However, there has been no response or progress from the agency, leaving the community to deal with ongoing traffic woes.

"The lack of action from TII is unacceptable," Councillor Duffy continued.

"Our town's traffic infrastructure needs to be brought into the 21st century to meet the demands of our growing population and the increasing number of vehicles on our roads.

"I implore the Minister Eamon Ryan and TII to fund their replacement as soon as possible and let people get on with their lives and not have to endure unnecessary tailbacks because of malfunctioning lights."
