Mayo's budding gardeners encouraged to submit entries for major competition

Children across Mayo have been busy at home and school taking part in this year's Woodie's Budding Gardeners competition.

Now in its fourth year, the competition saw a record number of registrations, and organisers are now encouraging people to get their entries in ahead of the closing date of Friday, May 31.

The overall winner will receive a cash prize of €1,000 and there will be 10 runners-up who will each take home a €250 Woodie's gift card.

This year's theme was 'The Power of Plants' and children were tasked to plant a patch for this year's competition.

Woodie's garden expert Brian Burke will choose the overall winner along with 10 runners-up, and he's looking forward to seeing this year's garden patch entries.

Brian said: “Entries for this year's Woodie's Budding Gardeners competition will close on Friday (May 31), so get them in now! I'm looking forward to seeing all the patch creations and the innovative thinking from the wonderful aspiring gardeners.

“I'll be keeping a close eye out for the plant a patch projects from budding gardeners at school and at home that showcase how much fun was had working on their projects while learning all about the power of plants. Best of luck to all the green-fingered budding gardeners, and well done!”

Rachael Williams, brand and communications manager at Woodie’s, added: “We've had an amazing response to this year's Woodie's Budding Gardeners campaign, and we encourage people to get their entries in ahead of the closing date to ensure they are in for a chance to win the overall prize of €1,000 cash or one of the 10 runner-up prizes of €250 Woodie's gift cards.
