New school building for north Mayo's Scoil Íosa approved
THE Department of Education has approved a new school building for Scoil Íosa in Ballina.
Minister of State Alan Dillon has welcomed the announcement of the new replacement 13 classroom primary school, plus classrooms for pupils with special needs, at the existing school site.
He said: “This is fantastic news for Scoil Íosa and their wider community. It will provide much-needed facilities for the current students and students with special educational needs in the area.
“I want to wish principal Michael Tunney, his staff, pupils and board of management the very best with this project in the months ahead.”
Minister of State Dara Calleary said he was 'thrilled' to announce that the new school build has been sanctioned to proceed to tender stage.
He stated: “Scoil Iosa is a wonderful school,blessed with fantastic staff, very dedicated boards of management and vibrant school communities over the years.
“The physical core of the current building dates back over 150 years. This new build will ensure a proper match of the physical building to the amazing school ethos.”
Deputy Michael Ring said it was very welcome news and the teachers and students will benefit from the new accommodation being provided.
“Capital funding in our education system in vital to improve the learning environment for all children,” he commented.
