€1.9m. additional funding for Mayo roads following extremely wet months

MAYO County Council is to receive an additional €1,966,500 for regional and local roads.

This is to deal specifically with the impact of climate change, which has contributed to a deterioration in the surface quality of certain parts of the network over the winter months.

Explained Minister of State Alan Dillon: “This funding is in addition to the €36.6m which was allocated to Mayo County Council in February for the protection and renewal of our existing regional and local road network.

“Following persistent rainfall over winter and spring, and in line with the government’s commitment to support local authorities in the maintenance and renewal of the regional and local road network, this emergency investment will assist in addressing the worst impacted areas of the road network across Mayo.

In persistent wet conditions, water seepage contributes to damage such as the development of potholes or pavement collapse.”

Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan and Minister of State Jack Chambers have announced €30 million nationally in additional funding for regional and local roads.

Said Minister Dillon: “Keeping our road network safe is a priority. Climate change, like the prolonged rain we saw this winter and spring, has a damaging impact on our road surfaces which has to be addressed quickly so that it does not lead to further deterioration.

“Through this additional funding Mayo County Council can begin to restore the impacted regional and local road network along with building resilience into the network in an ever-changing environment.”

Commented Deputy Michael Ring: “Following the persistent rainfall over winter and spring, many of our roads in Mayo have become damaged and this emergency investment will address the worst impacted areas of the road network in Mayo.

“Maintaining our regional and local road network in Mayo is not only important for connectivity, but crucial to ensuring safety on our roads, reducing road collisions and protecting lives.”
