Failure to update electoral register causing distress to bereaved Mayo families

A local election candidate in Mayo has criticised the failure to remove deceased persons from the local electoral register.

Antoinette Peyton, a candidate for the Swinford Local Electoral Area, has highlighted the distress being caused to bereaved families and says the register needs to be updated regularly.

She commented: “It has been brought to my attention a number of times on the doorsteps that people are receiving polling cards and other election material in the post for relatives that are no longer with us. As you can imagine this is a cause of further distress to bereaved families following the loss of a loved one.

“This is an issue that needs to be rectified.”

The Fine Gael candidate added: “I am calling on Mayo County Council and Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien, to make sure that this is the last election where families are put through this unnecessary grief and implement the necessary reforms.”
