Tributes paid to Mayo council official on retirement
THE head of the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District, Padraic Walsh, is retiring from Mayo County Council.
He attended his final monthly municipal meeting last week, with a special meeting on the Westport local area plan last Monday his finale after a career spanning in the region of three decades with the local authority.
Mr. Walsh leaves with many warm tributes being paid to him for his commitment and work, with his unique ability to deliver bad news particularly commented on by elected members.
As area manager, he had been firm and fair and took no nonsense, said Councillor Christy Hyland, who thanked him for 'running the show' these past number of years.
A 'safe pair of hands' at difficult times was how Councillor Gerry Coyle summed up Mr. Walsh, noting how no one could tell the bad news as good as him.
His approach was one of compromise and consultation and whoever succeeds him will have big shoes to fill, he said.
Councillor Paul McNamara agreed that he would deliver bad news with a smile. He was a gentleman to deal with and always told it as it was. It had been a huge pleasure to work with him.
An 'inspirational figure' is how Councillor Brendan Mulroy described Mr. Walsh; a great source of experience and guidance, added Councillor Peter Flynn, as all elected members paid tribute.
Mr. Walsh's management colleague, director of services Catherine McConnell, said he was a source of great counsel, great fun, and a steady pair of hands.
His steadiness and commitment will be missed.
In response, Mr. Walsh said it had been an honour to work with the councillors and he thanked them for their courtesy and cooperation.
He paid tribute to the team in the district office who he worked with, saying they are a great team.
