Mayo breastfeeding group celebrates first birthday

CHARLESTOWN Breastfeeding Support Group is celebrating its first birthday.

The group commenced in May 2023 in Charlestown Arts Centre, established by Una McInerney, public health nurse, and running every Tuesday at 11 a.m. for an hour.

The drop in group, now facilitated by Aileen Kirrane, public health nurse, has grown from strength to strength with mums and babies attending from all around Charlestown, Kilmovee, Tooreen, Swinford, Tubbercurry, Killasser, Kiltimagh, Lisacaul and Ballyhaunis.

Speaking at the birthday party, Aileen said: “The breastfeeding group provides support to mums, and I am there to give advice when needed.

“Maternity leave can be isolating. The Charlestown group provides a safe and informal forum for mothers and babies.”

These groups are an opportunity for mums to be, new and experienced mums to come together to share advice, experience, socialise, build new friendships in their local area and it gives mums an opportunity to speak with a breastfeeding expert.

A new mum who has been attending the Charlestown group with her baby stated: “It’s amazing and brilliant! I have been coming for six months. The support is invaluable, tea, chats, practical advice.

“It is lovely to watch the babies grow together. It’s the reassurance you get.”

Mayo Lactation Service provides weekly breastfeeding support groups in Mayo in Westport, Charlestown, Claremorris, Ballina and Castlebar.
