TALLIES AND REACTION

Independent Ireland is in line for its first ever councillor to Mayo County Council, with Chris Maxwell from Louisburgh polling very strongly according to initial tallies.

The tallies have him on 19.3% of the vote, with Peter Flynn closest to him on 16.7%. Brendan Mulroy - 1,300 votes - is just behind Johnny O'Malley (1327) in the race.

Final tally: Peter Flynn 1522, Karen Gallagher 428, Christy Hyland 1195, Kiera Keogh 1165, Chris Maxwell 1766, Niall McCormack 150, Brendan Mulroy 1300, Peter Nolan 287, Johnny O'Malley 1327.

17.15: With 67% of the boxes tallied in Westport, the breakdown is as follows: Flynn FG (1,149), Gallagher SF (318), Hyland (Ind.) 841, Keogh FG (898), Maxwell Ind. (986), McCormack Ind. (109), Mulroy FF (926), Nolan GP (217) and O'Malley (ind.) 854.

16.35: With eight boxes open Peter Flynn and Brendan Mullroy are both polling with 20% of the vote with Ciara Keogh on 15% and Christy Hylland also on 15%.

Chris Maxwell was a clear favourite on Clare island with 46 first preference votes.
