Mayo mourns passing of much loved and respected hospitality figure

MAYO is mourning the passing of Michael Cadden, a man synonymous with the hospitality sector in the county.

Michael, of Streamstown, Westport, died peacefully in the wonderful care of Mayo Hospice, surrounded by his family.

Michael was a well-known and respected figure in the hospitality trade in both Westport and Castlebar, establishing an excellence attached to the Cadden name over the years that continues to this day.

From Breaffy House to the Asgard and Bar One, he made his mark on the customers he served over many years with his warm, welcoming nature.

A tribute paid to Michael on Cadden's Bar One social media described how 'His presence was his superpower'.

“Whether you encountered him during his time at Breaffy House Hotel, Castlebar, the Asgard Bar and Restaurant, Westport, Zest Deli and Restaurant, Castlebar, or, in later years, here with us at Caddens’ Bar One at Rush Street, we hope you remember him with fondness.”

Other online tributes recall a man who was a great businessman, always a true gentleman and a wonderful person to work for.

Michael was predeceased by his parents Michael and Kathleen, baby son Michael and his sister Maureen.

He will be forever loved and missed by his wife Mary, sons Paul, Mark and Alan, daughters-in-law Sarah, Katie and Gretta, his adored grandchildren Reuben, George, Muire, Carrie, Willow, Ruairí and Sadie, sisters Ena, Breege and Assumpta, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours and many friends, to whom sympathy is extended on their great loss.

Reposing at his residence on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m., his funeral will be arriving to St. Mary’s Church, Westport, on Monday at 11 a.m. followed by Requiem Mass at 12 noon. He will be laid to rest after in Aughavale Cemetery.
