Status quo on the cards in Mayo four-seater
Despite early promise, Sinn Féin is unlikely to secure two seats in the four-seat Swinford electoral area.
With outgoing party Councillor Gerry Murray more of less over the line, based on tally estimates, with 1,337 first preferences, a double is looking an increasingly difficult task for Swinford-based candidate John Sheahan, standing on 1,154.
While he can expect transfers from Swinford-based candidate Antoinnette Peyton, her transfers are expected to go in greater numbers to her Foxford-based running-mate, Neil Cruise, who attracted 1,238 number ones.
Kilkelly-based Fianna Fáil Councillor John Caulfield is also set to prove wrong the commentators who wrote him off.
He has an estimated 1,248 first preferences and will return to office.
But perhaps the biggest story of the day in Swinford has been written by Fianna Fáil Councillor Adrian Forkan, who was co-opted to the council over a year ago.
According to tally figures, he is destined to top the poll with 1,385.
A result of FF (2), FG (1) and SF (1) is on the cards.
But there could be a late twist to the story as a number of boxes from Swinford and Charlestown are not included in the tally figures.
