Blackie sweeps back into power in Mayo as late drama unfolding

Castlebar Fianna Fáil candidate Blackie Gavin has been re-elected to Mayo County Council.

An elected representative since 1994, he said it was the toughest election he ever fought.

"It was a very challenging campaign and I am over the moon to win my seat.

"We have a lot of work ahead of us and I intend to put all my efforts in attracting greater investment for Castlebar and Mayo.

"I will give it my best shot."

Gavin was elected on the 11th count, getting over the quota of 1,877 after attracting 130 transfers from Lahardane-based Independent Gerry Loftus and finishing on 1,936.

It is only a matter of time before his Fianna Fáil colleague, Al McDonnell, is elected as he stands on 1,834 at the outset of the 12th count.

Outgoing Fine Gael Councillor Cyril Burke, with 1,539, will take the fourth seat, leaving three more to be filled.

The leading contenders for those are:

Donna Sheridan, FG (1,217)

Harry Barrett, Ind (1,154)

Stephen Kerr, Ind (1,100)

Martin McLoughlin, FF (1,054).
