Mayo TD 'to make decision on future soon' as he marks 30 years in Dáil

Mayo TD Michael Ring will make a decision about his political future within the coming weeks.

Amid growing speculation that he won't be putting his name forward as a Fine Gael candidate in the next general election, the Westport-based TD said he is inundated with people asking him not to retire.

On a weekend marking the 30th anniversary of him being first elected to Dáil Éireann in the 1994 West Mayo by-election, Deputy Ring said he will reach a final decision shortly on his future.

He stated: "Everybody knows I have enjoyed this way of life and I still have plenty of energy and motivation.

"But I am considering the matter with my family and I expect to reach a decision within the coming weeks. There is no doubt I would miss it if I decide to leave."

He declined to comment on speculation that he may consider seeking the position of Ceann Comhairle in the next Dáil.

However, that would require him standing in the next general election and being re-elected.

On the issue of the next general election, he stated: "I think it should be called for next September or October.

"Our new party leader, Taoiseach Simon Harris, has given Fine Gael an enormous bounce and it's important to capitalise on it.

"The local and European election have shown that our popularity and strength is restored at a time when Sinn Féin has gone into sudden decline.

"It's important to pick the right time and I am sure the Taoiseach will do so and I will be supporting him 100%.

"I am delighted that so many of our candidates have won or retained seats in the local elections and I know our party can go from strength to strength."
