Ryan re-elected and Gallagher claims seat on first Mayo outing

Ballinrobe Fianna Fáil Councillor Damian Ryan has been elected to Mayo County Council for the sixth consecutive election.

His seat was confirmed at the sixth count in the six-seat Claremorris electoral area.

First elected to office in 1999, he said he was delighted to increase his vote which was an endorsement of his work rate and dedication.

The sixth count also resulted in the election of Ballyhaunis Fine Gael candidate Alma Gallagher on her first running.

Alma becomes the first woman to be elected to the council from the south Mayo district.

"It's a privilege to finally see the glass ceiling being shattered and I look forward to represent my area with commitment over the coming years," she said.

Alma replaces John Cribbin who retired following long and dedicated service.

With the count continuing into the early hours, It now looks certain that Michael Burke, FG, and Aontú's Paul Lawless will join Patsy O'Brien, Richard Finn, Ryan and Gallagher in office with outgoing councillor Tom Connolly, FG, losing his seat.
