Reducing single-use plastic as Mayo town gets two new water fountains

APPROXIMATELY four years ago, when statistics showed that almost a quarter of a million single-use plastic bottles were used each day in Ireland, Westport Eco-Congregation started a campaign to reduce and, hopefully, get rid of plastic bottles in Westport.

The campaign involved many, many emails to Irish Water, Mayo County Council and to local councillors, as they needed to have a public supply of clean, drinkable water if people were to ditch the plastic in favour of filling their own keep bottles.

Now, Westport Eco-Congregation is delighted to celebrate the installation of two new water fountains in the town - one on James’ Street and the other on Bridge Street.

The water is filtered and of a top-class quality and they are encouraging everyone to bring their keep bottle (lots of these are available in local shops at reasonable prices) and enjoy this great facility without any cost to you and with great benefit to our Earth.

The new fountains were funded through the Local Property Tax and will be maintained by Mayo County Council.
