Temporary fencing at high risk areas along Mayo greenway

SOME temporary fencing at high risk areas along the Turlough greenway will take place this summer.

Castlebar Municipal District members were updated on the works by council management in a report for their June meeting.

As previously reported, approximately 500 metres of fencing between the Turlough greenway and the Castlebar river was replaced, largely funded through councillors' GMA.

The council continues to engage with potential funding groups/organisations to address upgrading/replacing the remaining fence, where required.

In the interim, they are proposing to provide some temporary fencing in isolated areas along some of the more high risk areas.

This work will be carried out over the summer.

A campaign had been launched for fencing at the location following a tragedy which claimed the life of a local man some months ago.

Elected representatives are very anxious that permanent measures are put in place to ensure the safety of all users of the greenway now and into the future.
