Fresh concern in Mayo as record low housing available to rent

Mayo is grappling with a renewed concern over the lack of affordable rental accommodation, with record low availability across the county.

In Castlebar, only three houses are currently available for rent, while Ballina has eight properties listed. The advertised prices in these areas have shown a marked increase in recent months, exacerbating the situation.

Overall, there are less than 20 properties available on Daft.ie to rent in Mayo.

The designation of the Westport electoral area as a Rent Pressure Zone (RPZ) was intended to alleviate the housing crisis, but it has yet to yield significant results. As of today, only one property is available to rent in Westport.

According to Daft.ie's Rental Price Report, Mayo has experienced one of the largest rent increases in Ireland. Last summer, the report stated that the average cost of renting a property in Mayo reached €1,222, representing a 5.7% increase from the previous quarter. This surge in prices, coupled with the limited supply, has left many renters struggling to find affordable housing.

With demand continuously rising and supply failing to keep pace with the growing population, it appears that many renters will continue to be priced out of the market.
