Mayo could be in the hat for preliminary quarterfinal draw on Monday

The draw for the preliminary quarterfinals in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship will take place on Monday (June 17) on the Morning Ireland show on RTÉ Radio 1. It will be conducted directly after the 8.30 a.m. news bulletin.

For the preliminary quarterfinals, the four second-placed teams from the group stages will be drawn to play at home against the four third-placed teams, subject in the first instance to the avoidance of repeat provincial final pairings and, where possible, repeat pairings from the group stage.

Should Mayo fail to beat Dublin in Sunday's game at Dr. Hyde Park, Mayo will be among the teams facing into a preliminary quarterfinal over the weekend of June 22/23 – but they would be guaranteed home advantage.

Opposition in the preliminary quarterfinal could come from the likes of Derry, Tyrone or Donegal, depending on the weekend's results.

Mayo played Galway in the Connacht final but given that second in their respective groups is the worst that both can finish, there is no chance of them meeting at the preliminary quarterfinal stage – unlike last year, when Mayo travelled to Salthill and came away with a famous victory.

Earlier today, both Mayo and Dublin named their teams for Sunday's Group 2 fixture, which throws in at 3.45 p.m. in the Roscommon town venue. Mayo were knocked out of last year's championship by Dublin at the quarterfinal stage, but this year both team's will progress regardless of next Sunday's result.

For Mayo to go straight through to the quarterfinals, they need to win the game. A draw will suffice for Dublin, the defending All-Ireland champions, thanks to their greater scoring difference.
