John O'Hara set to be elected cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council

BALLINA Councillor John O'Hara is set to be installed as the cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council when the authority convenes for the start of its five-year term on Friday.

The Fine Gael councillor topped the poll in the Ballina Municipal District in the local elections.

Since then, his party and Fianna Fáil have been in negotiations and The Connaught Telegraph understands Councillor O'Hara will be elected cathaoirleach for the first time after FF and FG reached a deal.

Fine Gael are also set to hold the position of cathaoirleach in Castlebar Municipal District this first term.

This Friday's annual general meeting of the county council gets underway at 11 a.m. and will see appointments being made to numerous committees and boards, including the West Regional Health Forum.
