Fianna Fáil's new deputy leader has strong Mayo links

FIANNA Fáil's new deputy leader, Jack Chambers, has strong Mayo links.

Both of his parents are natives of the county, his father hailing from Newport and his mother from Hollymount in south Mayo.

Tánaiste and FF leader Micheál Martin announced Minister Chambers' appointment as deputy leader yesterday.

He succeeds Mayo's Dara Calleary - the position being vacant since he resigned from the role in 2020.

Commenting on Mr. Chambers' appointment, Mr. Martin said: “He has served as a very effective councillor, TD and now as member of the government at cabinet.

“Since we entered government, he has been working exceptionally hard - in his roles as Government Chief Whip, Minister of State for Sport and The Gaeltacht, and in his current role as Minister of State at the Department of Transport and the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications.

“Jack was very impressive in the capacity of the Fianna Fáil director of local elections for the party. He impressed many with his commitment and organisational skills and helped to secure 248 council seats across the country, making Fianna Fáil the largest party in local government for the third consecutive term.”

Westport Councillor Brendan Mulroy was among the first to offer his congratulations: “Congratulations to Jack Chambers who has been appointed Fianna Fáil deputy leader by Micheál Martin. A great day for Newport, Mayo and Ireland. Looking forward to working with Jack into the future.”
