Appeal to newly-elected Mayo council 'to act on Palestine'

People Before Profit spokesperson for Mayo Joe Daly has called on the newly elected members of Mayo County Council to act with courage and humanity and to pass an historic motion on solidarity with Palestine.

He elaborated: "The world is watching as Israel continues to slaughter innocent civilians in its genocidal attack on Gaza.

"As of June 20 Israel has murdered at least 37,431 Palestinians in Gaza including more than 15,000 children with over 10,000 missing and at least 85,653 people seriously injured.

"Compare this to 1,139 mostly Israeli military personnel killed since October 7 and it becomes clear who the aggressor is.

“While the Irish government’s rhetoric has shifted from complete support of Israel under the false pretence that Israel is somehow defending itself, there has been nothing beyond symbolism.

"There have been no political, economic or cultural sanctions on this murderous terror state by the Irish Government which is called by the international boycott, divestment and sanctions movement.

“Furthermore, the Irish State continues to collaborate and facilitate US military using Shannon Airport as an airbase without any inspections which completely makes a mockery of our neutrality and makes us complicit in supporting this horrific slaughter of innocents in Gaza.”

Mr Daly called for the newly elected councillors to pass a resolution to fly the Palestinian flag outside Ára on Chontae, to publicly express solidarity and sympathy with the Palestinian people, to demand that the Irish government heavily sanction the apartheid State of Israel and cut all political, economic and cultural ties with it.

Mr Daly continued: “If every council in Ireland acted with courage and humanity the Irish government would be forced to move from empty rhetoric to serious action.

"We are working with other groups like Sinn Féin and the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign to have this motion passed.

"The Palestine Solidarity Movement in this county will be watching closely the outcome of any vote on this issue."
