ALDI spent €41.5 million with Mayo food and drink producers in 2023

ALDI Ireland has announced details of its continued significant contribution to Mayo’s economy and the impact of its charity partnerships across the county.

In its annual ALDI Economic Impact Report, published today, the company said it paid almost €3.5 million in wages and salaries and opened one new store, in Ballyhaunis, in 2023. In 2023, there were over 1.8m customer visits to ALDI stores in Mayo.

In 2023, ALDI sourced €41.5m of locally produced food and drink from Mayo-based suppliers. ALDI partners with five Mayo producers, including a long-term relationship with O’Hara’s of Foxford.

Last year, ALDI began working with 30 new Irish suppliers for the first time, opening opportunities for local companies to stock their local produce on the shelves of one of Ireland’s leading retailers.

Operating six stores in Mayo, ALDI employs 130 staff in the county and spends almost €3.5m on wages annually. ALDI opened a new store in Ballyhaunis last year, creating a total of 30 new jobs locally. All available job opportunities can be found on the ALDI recruitment website.

ALDI’s stores support multiple charities across Mayo at a local level. Each store is part of ALDI’s food waste reduction programme, with ALDI’s Mayo stores having donated over 129,000 meals through FoodCloud to local charities.

Each store is also part of ALDI’s Community Grants network, with RNLI Ballyglass and River Moy Search & Rescue some of the many local charities that benefitted from the programme in recent years.

In addition to donating to local charities, ALDI also supports local communities through its tree-planting initiative, with a commitment to planting one million native Irish woodland trees across Ireland by 2025. As part of this commitment, ALDI has planted over 141,000 trees in Co. Mayo to date.

The ALDI Economic Impact Report outlines ALDI’s contribution to the national and local economy, including investment in its product offering, its team and the communities the retailer serves.

In 2023, ALDI sourced €1.1 billion of locally produced food and drinks from Irish suppliers. In total, ALDI partnered with over 330 Irish producers throughout the year.

ALDI, which operates 161 stores across the country, increased its hourly pay rates for store colleagues from February 1 to €14.80, maintaining its position as Ireland’s best paying supermarket.

Commenting, Colin Breslin, managing director of buying and services with ALDI Ireland, said: “ALDI is committed to making a positive impact across the country. We continue to make a significant contribution in every local community that we serve and are proud to be a leading contributor to Mayo’s economy.”

Mr. Breslin added: “ALDI remains acutely conscious of the economic challenges that our suppliers have endured in the past year. This is why we continue to invest in valued partnerships that allow both our suppliers and our team to grow.

“In 2023, we spent €41.5 million sourcing locally produced food and drinks from Mayo suppliers. We are delighted to continue working with Mayo suppliers and expanding our Mayo based community in the upcoming year.”
