Mayo FG/FF alliance to nominate Donna Sheridan for Castlebar MD chair

The new Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil Alliance on Mayo County Council has chosen Fine Gael Councillor Donna Sheridan as its nominee for the chair of the Castlebar Municipal District.

Her election to the position takes place at 3 p.m. today and she will not be opposed by the independent technical group.

The FG/FF Alliance has four seats on the county town authority - Cyril Burke, Ger Deere, Al McDonnell and Donna Sheridan - while the technical group has three, Harry Barrett, Blackie Gavin and Michael Kilcoyne.

It will be the first time the Balla native becomes Castlebar's first citizen.

Councillor Sheridan will also be the first woman to hold the position of cathaoirleach of the municipal district.

Donna was first elected to the council in the 2019 local elections and retained her seat for a second term two weeks ago.

A member of the staff of Mayo Sligo Leitrim Education and Training Board, she will outline her priorities at this afternoon's annual general meeting.
