Two people rescued from Lough Mask after boat hit rocks

The Corrib Mask Search and Rescue (CMSAR) has revealed it was tasked by the Coast Guard to a boat in difficulty on Lough Mask in south Mayo.

A fishing boat had hit rocks on the lake when the weather unexpectedly turned nasty last Wednesday afternoon.

The fishermen on the boat called for help and the crew of CMSAR launched right away.

A spokeperson outlined: "Using our new Pioneer Multi boat, three crew set off from Cuslough Pier near Ballinrobe and were on scene within 20 minutes from being called.

"The two casualties were brought back to shore to our shore crew who assessed them and helped them get warm, the boat crew went back out and recovered the fishing boat.

"Both casualties were well prepared for the conditions, they were wearing their lifejackets and had a way to call for help.

"A prompt call to the CG on 999/112 allowed our crew to get out as quickly as possible and ensured a good outcome for all.

"As ever, always wear a lifejacket, carry a means of communication and let someone know where you’re going on the water.

"Don’t hesitate to call for assistance before things take a turn for the worse.

"We thank our volunteer crew as always for their dedication to the unit."
